In these case studies, the reader is provided with contrastive analyses of language use in important contexts such as globalised business, politics and classrooms. The framework is illustrated with case studies drawn from a variety of linguacultures, such as English, Chinese, Japanese and German. The authors provide a ground-breaking, language-anchored, strictly empirical and replicable framework applicable for the study of different datatypes and situations. Written by two leading scholars in the field, this book offers an accessible overview of cross-cultural pragmatics, by providing insights into the theory and practice of systematically comparing language use in different cultural contexts. Cross-Cultural Pragmatics is relevant for a variety of fields, such as pragmatics, applied linguistics, language learning and teaching, translation, intercultural communication and sociolinguistics. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book provides a cutting-edge introduction to cross-cultural pragmatics, a field encompassing the study of language use across linguacultures. ![]()

This public office was the first office in the cursus honorum, or “course of offices,” leading ultimately to the consulship. ![]() Then at twenty-five he prepared to stand for the quaestorship. He continued his education in Athens, toured Asia Minor, spent a year in Sicily. To a large degree, then, he missed the century of civil wars that played such an important role in the experience of our other poets, and he reached his maturity in the new, peaceful, and urbane Rome of Augustus. At about the time of Actium, Ovid, like others from his class, was sent to Rome for an education in rhetoric and law. Although my book is just entitled ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ on the spine it does actually include both novels. I will also refer to the second book as ‘Round the Moon’ as that is the title in this edition, ‘Autour de la Lune’ is more commonly translated as ‘Around the Moon’. ![]() The two books were published four years apart, ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ in 1865 with ‘Round the Moon’ being serialised in 1869 then coming out in book form in 1870 but they really have to be read together to get anything like a satisfying resolution. The plan is to top and tail the five essays with these two and an even earlier pair of French science fiction novels with some more ‘classic’ works in between. ![]() These two novels by that early master of science fiction Jules Verne mark the start of my annual August reading block of books with a link between them and this year I have decided on ‘translated from French’ as my theme. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Lucinda berry when she returned![]() ![]() She is a founding member of Dog Story Theater in Grand Rapids, Michigan. But there is no human life in which a woman is not relevant - as a mother, daughter, lover, friend, neighbor, boss, enemy, if not existing purely as a self.
